Quick validation snapshot

Vermont has the highest estimate ($8,075); Alaska has the lowest ($2,288). The U.S. benchmark is $4,503. The U.S. figure divides the 50 states’ combined collections by their combined population; DC, whose government also collects city-type taxes, is excluded. These are useful checks when importing the CSV into a spreadsheet. Reference jurisdictions may lie outside the 50-state range, so exclude rows marked reference when reproducing the default state ranks.

The survey covers every state government, so there is no sampling error, but figures can be revised when the Census Bureau publishes full state finance data.

Calculation and reproducibility

1,000 × sum of all tax items for the state in the FY2025 flat file ($ thousands) / July 1, 2025 resident population (Vintage 2025). Census does not publish per-capita collections.

Limits and reuse

State government taxes only: local taxes, such as most property taxes, are not included, so states that leave more to local governments look lower. Some taxes are paid by visitors or out-of-state businesses, for example tourism and oil and gas severance taxes. Fiscal years end on different dates in different states.
