Facts, choices, and interpretation
A producer observation is a fact about what that producer estimated under a defined method. A ranking direction, normalization formula, or weight is a method choice. An explanation of a pattern is interpretation. We identify these roles rather than treating every computed score as an objective verdict.
Numeric summaries are generated from the same observations as the tables. Definitions and limitations are attached to each measure. A current calendar year does not replace a data year in a title. We do not invent missing states, prior-release changes, expert quotes, search volumes, or personal experience.
Neutral measures
We use measure names such as uninsured rate, adult degree attainment, or monthly housing costs. We avoid describing a state’s people as better or worse because of a statistical position. Demographic characteristics describe a population and are not a score of its worth.
Cross-state correlations do not establish policy effects. A comparison cannot isolate the effect of a political party, a law, or public spending without a suitable research design. Our rankings are not partisan scorecards, individual relocation advice, or investment recommendations.
Commercial independence
Advertising, affiliates, sponsors, and state tourism payments may not change an observation, a ranking formula, or a weight. We do not sell favorable positions. Any future sponsorship will be disclosed near the relevant material. The site currently runs no ads or analytics. If advertising is added, it will be served by Google AdSense and will never affect a ranking.
Competitor methodologies may be discussed with attribution and links, but their proprietary ranking tables are not republished. A source’s permission for reading a chart is not assumed to grant commercial redistribution or an API license.

Responsibility: the publisher. Automated checks cover source-file hashes, all-state coverage, exact population accounting, price-adjustment arithmetic, microdata means and replicate-weight margins, and page/browser behavior. Selected ACS histories retain source years and margins; the 2024 rent-processing and owner-cost definition changes are flagged where relevant. Public evidence: verification ledger, calculation script and limitations, and the change log. These checks are automated and documented; they are not an outside expert review.
Accountability
The publisher is responsible for this independent publication. Rankings are produced by the publication rather than by named outside experts. Readers can inspect source records, reproduce the calculation, and report an error.
New releases pass data validation and review before publication. Definitions, uncertainty, and source limitations take precedence over expanding the page count. The first edition’s coverage is explicit, and future subject areas remain outside the catalog until their data are validated.
