Map scales and reference years
A darker shade means a higher value on this continuous scale; it does not mean better or worse. The endpoints use the minimum and maximum among the 50 states. Every state can be selected by keyboard to open its report card. Alaska and Hawaii are moved and resized to fit beside the other states; all states share the same color scale.
For raw population totals and numeric changes, rankings use bars rather than a filled geographic map. Large land areas should not visually stand in for large populations. DC and Puerto Rico appear as reference rows in the associated table. Their values do not set the default color endpoints.
The ranking table, data download, and map use the same stored observations. Source years are visible on the ranking page; changing the measure can change the year. For survey data, check margins of error and the pairwise comparison tool before interpreting a small color difference as a meaningful gap.
