Education
rankings by state.
Educational attainment among adults age 25 and older. These rankings describe qualifications, not the quality of a state’s school system.
State distributions: each mark is one state, from lowest to highest. Each row uses its own scale.

Choose a qualification threshold, not a school grade
All three measures here describe adults age 25 and older. High school attainment includes those with college degrees; bachelor’s attainment includes those with advanced degrees. The categories overlap, so adding the percentages would double count people. These measures describe current residents, including adults educated elsewhere. Migration, age composition and employment patterns can affect the shares without any change in the performance of local schools.
Use the same qualification threshold and year for a state comparison. An attainment rank is not a test-score rank, student graduation rate or school-quality evaluation. Read margins of error before interpreting a one-place difference, and use the comparison tool for two-state significance checks. Within-state differences between overlapping qualifications need a different variance calculation; the independent-state test does not apply to them.

The linked pages retain exact source precision for ranks, show true ties, and display uncertainty where it is available. The comparison tool lets you inspect selected states without changing their rank among the full 50-state universe. Shared comparisons preserve their data edition.
Each ranking covers all 50 states using a consistent source release. DC and Puerto Rico are labeled reference jurisdictions. Compare point estimates alongside margins of error; a rank is not a judgment about a state or its residents.
