State distribution and comparisons

The middle of the 50-state distribution is 1.94%: the average of the 25th and 26th ordered state estimates. This treats each state equally, so it answers a different question from a population-weighted national estimate.

Did the fastest-growing economies also add the most people?

These states’ ranks change the most between real gdp growth and population growth. These comparisons identify different questions worth investigating; a rank gap does not measure a causal effect or a statistical difference between unlike units.

What this ranking measures

Percentage change in real (inflation-adjusted) GDP from 2024 to 2025.

One year of growth is volatile, especially in states dominated by agriculture, energy or a few large employers. Real state GDP is adjusted with national prices, not state prices.

The size of the gap

The difference between the highest and lowest state estimates is 5.56 percentage points. The U.S. benchmark is 2.34%. It is not a simple average of the states.

17 states have point estimates above the U.S. benchmark and 33 below it. These counts do not establish statistical significance.

How much should you read into a rank?

BEA does not publish margins of error for state GDP. Estimates are revised as source data improve; recent years change the most. “Not published” means uncertainty is not quantified here, not that the estimates are exact.

Ranks use the full precision of the source file, so only truly equal values share a rank (1, 2, 2, 4).
